    Building Committee

The Library's Board of Trustees hired a library building consultant at the July 14th meeting. Fred Schlipf, who has over 30 years experience working in libraries and on library building projects, will be working with the library in the Fall of 2011. Mr. Schlipf will be working to create a "building program" for a new or remodeled library building. We are looking at a larger facility so that we can better serve our public.

Mr. Schlipf will be conducting focus groups of various community members to determine what the Community of Shorewood would like to see in any potential new building. Dates and times for these focus groups are to be announced. However, if you would like to participate, please let our director, Jennie Mills, know. She can be reached at 815-725-1715 or by email at jmills@shorewoodtroylibrary.org.

Menbers of the Public are invited to attend Building Committee meetings.

    Library History
Prior to 1972, the residents of the Village of Shorewood and Troy Township were required to purchase a non-resident card from a neighboring library to receive library services.

In 1972, arrangements were made under the Project Plus Books program for the Bur Oak Library System bookmobile to visit the Village twice per month.  Funds to pay for the bookmobile were raised by a committee appointed by the Village of Shorewood's Park and Recreation Committee.

In February 1975, the committee canvassed the residents to see if they would support a library of their own.  The survey showed that 4 out of 5 residents wanted a library.  A demonstration library was opened in Shorewood Plaza in August of that year, pending approval of a referendum planned for April of 1976.

Voters approved the 1976 referendum by a 2 to 1 margin and the village of Shorewood and Troy Township had their own official, tax supported library at the demonstration location.  A few years later the library moved to a larger storefront in Shorewood Plaza.  The library applied for and was awarded a $250,000 Library Services and Construction Act Grant in June, 1984 by the the Illinois State Library.  It was then moved from the Shorewood Plaza to its own 15,000 square foot building in August 1985 and was opened to the public.

In 1992-93, with the assistance of a $75,000 Library Services and Construction Act Grant, the Shorewood-Troy Public Library completed the lower level, where the Youth Services Department and meeting room are now located.  Installation of an elevator and wheelchair accessible restrooms came in response to the American with Disabilities Act of 1990.

    RAILS, PrairieCat, & OMNI

On September 19, 2011, 19 western Illinois and eastern Iowa libraries withdrew from PrairieCat. A complete listing can be found on the RiverShare website. Items from those library are no longer available for in-system holds or checkouts, but may be available through out-of-system interlibrary loan. Please see a reference librarian for more information.

The Shorewood Public Library is an OverDrive Media of Northern Illinois (OMNI) library. This group of libraries share a collection of downloadable ebooks and audiobooks available to library patrons.
